Some say a picture is worth a thousand words. And when analyzing the massive amounts of data generated by Twitter, this adage could not be more appropriate. FUSE Labs’ SocialGadgets are a set of embeddable widgets that visualize Twitter real-time data. Each gadget focuses on a given keyword and displays its volume of usage over time. Mentioned entities such as people, locations, companies and noun phrases are identified and visually represented. The gadgets are interactive, letting users explore the relationships between topics publically shared on Twitter. By focusing on patterns and trends, the gadgets can extrapolate what people find important, and provide a succinct yet effective way to look at events as they are unfolding.Twitter, 'the pulse of the world,' is an incredibly rich data source used by millions across the globe. People post their thoughts, ideas and whereabouts via text-based status updates. Visually displaying trending topics can help readers better understand content and its context. By using any one of the four SocialGadgets, data flowing through the Twitter fire hose is indexed and semantically analyzed in real-time. Within minutes, major entities are identified and their relationships are displayed. The gadgets are easily configured, allowing users to choose a keyword and a template type, then copy and paste an embed code to be displayed on a website of their choice.

#socl new #startup #curation #pln edtool by #Microsoft Research FUSE Labs alternative 4 #pinterest just got better #edtech20 #pln

Today I plan to write about top 10 social media tools to brand your name, but I saw today that Socl just got better and here are the new features on http://www.so.cl/#/profile/Duma-Cornel-Lucian and I invite you to add a comment if you think is better curation tool than http://pinterest.com/LucianeCurator/ for education ..
What is Socl?
Socl — pronounced social — allows you to express and share your ideas through rich post collages comprised of images, links, captions and videos.Socl is a research project from Microsoft Research FUSE Labs and began as an experiment in social search targeted at students for the purpose of learning. Following the lead of the Socl community, Socl has since evolved to be a service where people connect over shared interests expressed through beautiful posts that take only seconds to create.
Last features launched today by So.cl
Here are a few changes you’ll notice right away…
Posts. Viewing the rapid feed on Socl is faster and, well, just better. The home screen is all about the beautiful posts you create (often in just seconds, using the new post creator!). You can choose to see the posts two-columned or three, so it’s less likely you’ll miss out on anything. And now you can see the posts even if you are not signed in or are new to Socl.
Interests. The crowd-sourced interest gallery is more discoverable, helping you socialize with like-minded people over topics you care about.
People/Me. People finding and following can be done via posts, the new people gallery, or from a person’s page. Everyone on Socl has an updated page where profile information, posts, interests, people and parties can be viewed together in one place. Check out your “me page” today, or if you’re new to Socl, sign in and we’ll create a page for you.
Parties. Create a playlist and watch videos with others in Socl, and chat together as you watch.

In Socl, how do I create a rich post?
Socl makes it easy to create a beautiful post you’re proud to share. Simply use the post creator to find interesting images, links and videos on the web and let the post creator do the rest – your selections will be automatically assembled into a compelling collage in just seconds.
What is a riff in Socl?
A riff in Socl is a visual response to a post, usually extending the original post in some manner thereby providing a way to continue a conversation visually. All the posts in a riff are viewable together using view riffs – the post that inspires the riff is clearly marked and attribution is also given to the riff post as well.
What are Interests in Socl?
Socl Interests are public groups organized around post content.

Socl makes it easy to connect with people from all over the world who share your interests – whatever they may be. Socl Interests are dynamic and crowd-sourced so the possibilities are virtually limitless. Are you a Social Media Curation addicted? If so, visit the CURATION Interest to see posts on food and connect with people who share your passion. Is football a thing? Create your own post about football, tag it, and discuss it with other football fans on Socl. From food to football; tech to tectonics – you’ll likely find the topic on Socl and enjoy connecting with like-minded people.
Who are the People on Socl? How do I find my friends?

Socl is an open social network where people connect around posts and choose to follow people, interests, or both. While you may discover some of your Facebook friends on Socl, you will more likely discover new people or topics you’d like to follow. Of course, you can invite your friends to join you on Socl by sharing posts to Facebook, Twitter or email or simply by sending them an invitation. If you choose to sign in using Facebook, your Facebook friends on Socl will also be easily visible from your People View on your Me Page.
What is the Me Page?

Every Socl user has a Me Page which is created once you’ve signed in on Socl using your Facebook or Microsoft account.

From your Me Page, you can see a feed of all the posts you’ve created or interacted with or, if you prefer, you can see your feed organized by conversation. From Me, you can:
See all the posts you have created
Manage the Interests you follow
Manage the People you follow
See the video parties you have created
Manage settings for Socl such as profile information (picture and bio), preferences for language and notifications and more.
Why doesn't my photo appear when signing in with my Microsoft Account?

For privacy reasons, your Microsoft Account photo is not available for Socl to use. In order to have a profile photo, update your Socl settings to link to profile picture available on the internet (such as a Skydrive public folder).
What is a Video Party?

A Video Party is a shared video experience on Socl. Socl lets you search and quickly assemble a list of videos to view and chat about together, in real time if you like. You can create your own party, or join an existing party created by another person.
How does Socl work?

The Socl post creation experience is powered by Bing; we use the public Bing APIs to display search results. When people want to express themselves on Socl, they look for great content on the web and share the results in the form of a post collage. These results can be web pages, images, or videos found through Bing or found while simply browsing the web and shared with the Socl community (the Socl bookmarklet makes this easy to do). Posts can be tagged to Socl Interests to aid discovery and discussion.
What is the Socl bookmarklet and how do I use it?

The Socl bookmarklet provides an easy way to share a link on the web to Socl. Click here to add the Socl bookmarklet to your browser.
Is Socl data public?

Public data enables new types of research and experimentation, and is a primary goal for Socl. Your post and any other data you post to Socl may be viewed by all other Socl users. In addition, data publicly posted on Socl can be used by other entities and individuals.

For more information please read our Privacy Statement.
Can I delete my data in Socl?

Yes. You have options ranging from deleting a single item, comment, or post, to deleting all your history, or your entire account. Deleted data may however have been included in data sets shared with third parties; deletion of your data from Socl will not delete entries from such data sets. For more information please read our Privacy Statement.
Can anyone join Socl? Does it cost anything?

Anyone can join Socl; Socl is free.
Does my Socl data appear on Facebook?

No, not unless you choose to share to Facebook.

Socl uses two services for authentication, or sign in: the Microsoft account or Facebook.

If you choose to use Facebook authentication – which means you use your Facebook account to sign in – your name and profile picture from Facebook will appear in Socl by default.

By default we do not post any content from Socl into your Facebook stream. If you choose, you can post content to Facebook using the share to Facebook feature in Socl.
Does Socl compete with social networking and search sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr, Bing, or Google?

No, Socl is an experimental research project with a minimal set of features that combine social networking and search for the purpose of enabling people to express and share ideas through rich visual collages, organized by interests.
What are the other social experiments that you are engaged in?

Other ongoing experiments include:
Kodu: teaches kids programming and creativity on the XBox and PC.
Montage: creates a visual album of the web on the topics you care about.
Docs: lets you discover, create and share documents with your friends, coworkers, and classmates on Facebook.
or see more projects from FUSE Labs.

These projects are experiments from Microsoft Research, and like other research projects, you should not expect that these projects will be supported by a Microsoft product team.
